Having recently lost two of the many inspiring women in recent memory, we dedicate this show to all inspiring women and all women inspired.
Primarily colorists, Kiki Dufault and Karen Iglehart find inspiration in many places. Dufault, a painter, uses broad and gestural brush strokes full of color. With the movement of paint, a dialogue between the figure and the natural world organically evolves. Among the women she’s found most influential, Dufault sites her family, “My earliest female influences were my mother, a dancer; my grandmother, a painter and photographer; and my aunt, a singer and pianist. The individuality, strength and creative freedom of countless artists and musicians—many of them women—helped shape my vision and approach as a painter and musician”.
Iglehart, a painter and photographer finds herself largely influenced by her experience as a Buddhist practitioner, with a desire to create and share a space that allows the mind to stop, or at least to pause. Using graphite and palette knife application as points of energy she allows the viewer to feel a sense of relaxation…space to move into and to experience. Says Iglehart of her female artistic influences, “As a young painter, some of my muses included Alice Neel, Frida Kahlo, Joan Mitchell, Helen Frankenthaler, Lee Krasner, Georgia O’Keeffe and Joan Brown. Music has been equally influential, from Billie Holiday and Etta James to Kitty Wells, Patsy Klein, Hazel Dickens and Karen Dalton.
